Gonou Giota Square, a structural element of Giannitsa’s urban planning organization, was designed in 1932. It is a linking point of the neighborhoods of the city, the old Ottoman and the new districts, such as Varossi and Boutsava, Karyoton and Hazne. All main streets lead to Gonou Giota square, a meeting and communication place. The square was given its form during the Postwar Period. It was decorated with four marble busts of local heroes, the Macedonian Struggle Fighter Gonos Giotas, early work of the prominent sculptor Dimitris Kalamaras, the Macedonian Struggle Fighter Konstantinos Boukouvalas, the Macedonian Struggle Fighter Ioannis Demestichas and the mayor of Giannitsa Thomas Magriotis. Beside the official name of the square, residents continue to use the unofficial, Maggou square. Earlier, the name Plateia Laspis (Mud Square) reflected the water overflow problem, which was solved with the construction of a plate-roofed pipeline.
