Filippeio, the Big Park

Google Customer Rating:
User Rating:

Until the early 20th century, Filippeio was a bare hill, a treeless mound. In the Interwar period, it was planted with trees and developed into an urban park named the Big Park, hosting at the foot of the hill the first cinema that projected silent films. During the same period, the September fair featured pehlivan oil wrestling, car races and live stock trading.
The first cafe was built in the 1940s. Initially, it had a folk character, as opposed to the polished Kifissia of Hazne. In the Postwar period, the works of the Giannitsa Municipality and the Prefecture of Pella, transformed the hill into a modern recreation park that was named Filippeio. The location did not only serve as a recommended tourist destination, but it also offered local people the aesthetics and experience of a desired urban identity. In 2005 the statue of Philip II was erected, investing the space with a monumental sculpture.
