Gazi Evrenos was a military commander who spearheaded the conquest of the Balkan Peninsula by the Ottomans. He is considered the founder of Giannitsa (1380-1385). He lived in Giannitsa and was buried there, in 1417. The initial mausoleum, which stood on top of his grave, was a luxurious, square structure, capped with a lead dome. The site, due to the burial of this important person and his descendants, gradually became a place of pilgrimage. After the mid-17th century, the initial structure was expanded, while in the early 20th century the building underwent radical reformation, taking, more or less, its current form.
A cist grave survives in the interior with mural decoration that resembles marble revetment. The marble grave stele of Gazi Evrenos is also exhibited here.
